Note: KV4P-HT currently supports FM mode only. Please make sure to install the latest firmware and app version for optimal performance.

At Chelegance, we’ve listened to feedback from enthusiasts who were excited about the KV4P-HT project but faced challenges such as:

HOW TO USE

（Most of the photos below are from KV4P-HT 2.0
  1. Unbox Your Kit
    Open the package and take out the KV4P-HT along with the included components.

         

  2. Connect the Antenna
    Attach the SMA Male Antenna provided in the kit to the KV4P-HT.

  3. Connect to Your Android Phone
    Use the DATA cable to connect the KV4P-HT to your Android phone.
    ※For the 2.0&1.8a version, you will need to connect data cable (TYPE-C TO TYPE-C)directly to your phone
    ※For the 1.7b version, you will need to connect the OTG and data cable included in the package

  4. Install the Android App
    • Search for “KV4P HT” on the Google Play Store or use the direct link to download the app.
    • The app requires Android 8 or higher, which was introduced in 2017. Most modern Android phones with a USB-C connector are compatible.

  1. Flash the Firmware

    The first time you open the app, it will automatically flash the firmware onto your KV4P-HT. This process takes approximately 1–3 minutes.

  2. Get on the Air!

Once the setup is complete, you’re ready to start using your KV4P-HT handheld transceiver! For the 1.7b and 1.8a version, you need to press the transmit button in the app. However, with the 2.0 version, you can send directly using the PTT button.

Q1: What is KV4P HT?
KV4P HT is a homebrew VHF radio system that lets your Android phone communicate off-grid via voice and text (amateur radio license required). Chelegance helps bring this open-source project to life as an all-in-one kit — ready to use right out of the box.
Q2: Do I need to assemble or solder anything?
No. Chelegance- version KV4P-HT is fully assembled and requires no soldering or complex setup.
Q3: What’s included in the kit?
  • KV4P HT main control board (with 3D printed enclosure)
  • VHF SMA Antenna
  • Pre-installed firmware(Maybe not the latest version)
  • Connection cables
Note: Android phone is not included.

Q4: What is the typical output power of the KV4P module?
The KV4P module typically outputs around 1W of RF power.

Q5: What type of antenna connector does the KV4P-HT use?
The included antenna uses an SMA male connector, which fits the KV4P-HT module’s requirements.

⚙️ Compatibility & Usage

Q6: Does it work with iPhones or iOS?
No. KV4P currently only supports Android devices.
Q7: Do I need to install any software?
Yes. Please download the KV4P Android app from the official update page: 👉https://kv4p.com/quick_start.html
The app requires Android 8 or higher, which came out in 2017 and pretty much all phones with a USB C connector will have.
NOTE: Although all KV4P HT units are pre-flashed with the latest working firmware before shipping (we test each unit individually), the app will still automatically re-flash the firmware upon first launch. This ensures your device has the most up-to-date version. The flashing process takes approximately 5–10 minutes.

Q8: What modes are supported on the KV4P-HT v2.0 RF module?
The RF module currently supports FM mode only. Other modulation modes are not available at this time.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

Q9: What should I do if I see “Module not responding” and the device fails to connect?

  • Update the app and firmware to the latest version.
  • Try using a different USB data cable to ensure the cable is not faulty.
  • If possible, test the device on another Android phone to rule out compatibility issues.
Q10: Where can I find more technical support?
KV4P is an open-source project. All Chelegance-version KV4P HT units are pre-flashed with firmware and functionally tested before shipping to ensure they work out of the box. But if you encounter technical issues, we recommend first checking the following resources:
